Diesel: Be Stupid

25 Aug

Diesel’s “Be Stupid” ads were published to get some laughs and win over some new Diesel fans. Turns out they’ve got influential NYC fashion bloggers writing them off as “well, really, really stupid” and have actually been banned in poster or billboard form by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority who claims the ads are unsuitable to be viewed by children, offensive and encouraged anti-social behavior.

In the same season, this very same campaign was then awarded the Grand Prix Lion in the outdoor category at the recent Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Calculated Fashion

23 Aug

The fashion industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that can have an incredible impact and this fashion week the impact will be calculated by steps for one manufacturer.

New York fashion week starts in a couple of weeks and Nine West has created a limited edition boot that includes a pedometer that will be tracking number of steps that their key models take. Steps through morning fittings all the way up to late night events. Each step translates into a monetary donation Nine West will be donating to Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

You can get in on the action, too, by signing up with Modelina website and adding a donation of $1 per 10 steps. Nine West/Modelina will also be getting the motorcycle boots up for sale through their Facebook page and in their NYC 5th Avenue location.

Reclaimed Coney Island

28 Jul

Brooklyn-based furniture design company Uhuru presented its Coney Island Line at New York Design Week a few months back. The collection consists of limited edition furniture made from reclaimed Ipe wood from the iconic boardwalk of Coney Island. The designs are inspired by the rides of the erstwhile amusement park; be it the Cyclone Lounger that is reminiscent of a rollercoaster, the Wonder Wheel Coffee Table reminding of the ride itself or the Boardwalk Console whose table top is patterned on the inlaid design of the original boardwalk.

The Meteoric Rise Of Twitter

20 Jul

A very looooong infographic showing the rise of twitter and other interesting and relevant Twitter stats from Digital Buzz Blog.

This is another interesting infographic, this time around twitter’s journey to over 100 million unique users with breakdowns on key events, reasons for growth in social and mobile and a nice breakdown of twitter users in the US. One of the stand out points, is that Twitter has an awareness of 87% while Facebook is just 88% – considering the number of Facebook users, it’s a huge feat for twitter to even come close, and I suspect we can put that down to the media hype (and the celebs) surrounding twitter in the last 18 months.

Mad Design

18 Jul

madmendesign

Mochi and I have been catching up on Mad Men seasons 1 and 2, since 3 was really our first full viewing season. Its’ been especially interesting to watch the narrative of host/creator Matthew Weiner through AMC’s season highlights marathon and learn how the direction of the shots and story details come together to get the intention and accuracy that we soak in when we’re watching the show. The show’s parallels to today’s agency life are in every episode, which is entertaining for us agency folk. I love the design on these series promotional posters.

“The Social Network”, in theaters 10.10

3 Jul

Sony Pictures are making a movie called “The Social Network” and this is the teaser video, visually it’s slightly underwhelming, but if you listen, I guess the storyline could be quite interesting, in fact you don’t even need to listen… It’s easy to imagine the sorts of things that could happen in a movie about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook! /via Digital Buzz

Make sure to check-in when you go, I’m sure there will be a badge to win.

It must be…

1 Jul

…the year of the hipster infographic.

Just ran across this Hipster Fashion Cycle infographic through NotCouture, which is seemingly quite accurate. This is the second infographic with hipster reference in just a few months. Remember the Hipster to Hippie in 6 easy steps meme?

Mobile Geo-fashion

29 Jun

Geofencing – when the location-aware device of a location-based service (LBS) user enters or exits a geofence, the device receives a generated notification. This notification might contain information about the location of the device. The geofence notice might be sent to a mobile telephone or an email account. — Wikipedia

Enter Lustr, what appears to be the first geo-fencing shopping mobile app to the fashion world. Lustr has collected a database of 2,000 stores and 3,000 brands to partake in this most dangerous app. Think Urban Spoon for the shopper/fashionista with neawly added Foursquare “Special Nearby” deal functionality for participating boutiques. The app is compatible with most smart phone devices but only listings only cover the NY area at this time.
